Fashion Week Skin-spiration: 5 Trends We Spotted Backstage That You’ll Love This Fall

NY Skin-Spiration

There was a real-world refresh at New York Fashion Week this season, at least backstage. Amidst the bustle of models, makeup artists and hair stylists creating truly memorable hair and makeup moments, we spotted a new makeup trend or two. Think glossy lids, eyeliner galore, a focus on individuality above dyed-in-the-wool mega trends, more diversity than ever when it came to models, and a new playfulness that took the artless elegance of off-duty beauty and mashed it up with a bolder take on inspirational glamour. Here are our five stand-out looks that you can try right now.

Fall Makeup Trend 1: Real-world skin is in

Skin that looks like skin, with real-world textures, definition and a healthy, luminous glow dominated the shows backstage. At Tia Cibani, the models were fresh-faced with “ballerina complexions” — barely-there makeup with a pretty flush on the cheeks and eyes. The key to emulating this “no makeup makeup” look is starting with great skin prep, so brush up on your cleanser-freshener-moisturizer-oil regime now! Even at Chloé, Vivienne Westwood and Elie Saab, where the makeup looks were more dramatic — with bold, bright pops of color (Vivienne Westwood) or smokey, grunge-glamour eyes (Chloé and Elie Saab) — the skin was a quiet, beautiful counterpoint, adding a note of freshness to the season.

RUNWAY TO REALITY: It starts with the prep, so add much-needed moisture back to your complexion with the multi-tasking SHISEIDO Future Solution LX Replenishing Treatment Oil, which leaves your skin silky soft with a dewy finish. Mix with your moisturizer and apply with fingertips, massaging in with circular motions. Alternatively, for an extra glossy finish like the models backstage, mix the oil with your cream or liquid foundation and apply as usual for sheeny skin with real NYFW allure.

Fall Makeup Trend 2: Pastel power — the Sixties revisited

Pastel hues kept cropping up backstage: from the corner liquid liner flick at Oscar de la Renta (which was accompanied by a jolt of lilac, pastel pink or turquoise), to the 60s pastels given a modern revamp at Anna Sui. While the pretty cheek illustrations were a more literal take on the “flower power” era, the models’ pastel-hued complexions and glossy lids were a beautifully wearable take on the trend. The power of pastel pink (with a hint of coral) was shown to maximum effect on an ethereal-looking Gigi Hadid at Anna Sui. Her powdery pink lips, soft coral-pink cheeks and those glistening mermaid-esque eyelids encapsulated the softer, more feminine mood resonating throughout Fashion Week this season.

RUNWAY TO REALITY: SHISEIDO Paperlight Cream Eye Color in Sango Coral is the perfect shade to realize the easy elegance of this pretty trend. Using fingertips, dot the product onto your eyelids and, if desired, right up to the brow bone as the texture is so sheer it’s very easy to play around with. Mix with highlighter and use on the cheekbones too, for extra sheen. For on-trend glossy lids, apply your SHISEIDO Paperlight Cream Eye Color first, then add just a touch of clear gloss to the center of lids for a high-shine effect.

Fall Makeup Trend 3: The rules are there ain’t no rules with daring liner

Dramatic eyeliner is currently riding the trend train, with feline flicks and double-lined lids galore. According to the trend oracle that is Fashion Week, it’s set to continue into 2018. The catch? Well, this time around, it’s all about customizable liner looks, from curvy, glittering wings to fingerprint smudges. Backstage at Marc Jacobs, the makeup artists told us that they were taking the customization trend one step further. Think a unique twist on 60s fave the cat’s eye, but varying in thickness and drama, according to each model’s lash line and personality.

Meanwhile, at Jill Stuart, the elegant yet striking move towards reverse eyeliner — whereby black liner is applied to the lower lash line and flicked out as the upper lash line is left bare — looked fresh and bold. It’s easy to master too. Definitely a case of come as you are…

RUNWAY TO REALITY: Apply SHISEIDO Inkstroke Eyeliner in a smooth line on the lower lash line, using SHISEIDO Inkstroke Eyeliner Brush. This professional tool has an angled head, so it’s easy to create precise lines. Next, take your liner out into a wing at the outer corner of the eyes, as usual. The water-resistant gel is smudge-proof, so your look will last all day. Leave the upper lash line bare and slick on mascara to open up your eyes.

Fall Makeup Trend 4: A new riff on glamour

Nothing evokes images of old Hollywood glamour and the heyday of the femme fatale like red lipstick. This season at NYFW, we spotted a new take on the classically alluring red lip. All the thrills, but with a fresh twist at Helmut Lang, the models rocked cooler-than-thou red pouts painted in an ombre technique. The cherry-colored center of the lip faded out to a burgundy-stained shade at the outer corners. Provocative, yet actually very wearable (keep skin, eyes and brows played down and simple to keep it modern), according to the pros, this lip look is set to be your new season makeup game changer.

RUNWAY TO REALITY: First apply SHISEIDO Perfecting Stick Concealer all over the lips to neutralize your natural lip color. Then slick on SHISEIDO Rouge Rouge lipstick in Hushed Tones all over the lips, straight from the tube, as you don’t want this to look too “done”. Blot using a tissue, then apply SHISEIDO Rouge Rouge in Ruby Copper to the center of the lips, using your fingertips to smudge it gently outwards and blend the two shades for a pretty, ombre effect.

Fall Makeup Trend 5: Berry lips + bold brows = The new power makeup

Spoiler alert: Next spring’s vibe calls for playful yet powerful makeup looks. Never ones to shy away from bold trends (they used Snapchat filters as beauty inspo two seasons ago!) the cool kids at Desigual took some classic beauty looks that we all love and cleverly reworked them for the new season. Note the matte dark-berry-meets-plum lipstick paired with naked skin, minimal eye makeup and super bold brows.

The strong lips and brows combo works because it balances the features. In other words, that means it’s ultra flattering for all face shapes and skin tones! Berry hues also work well for fall, so stay one step ahead of the beauty pack and experiment with this look now. If you only try one trend this season, make it this one.

RUNWAY TO REALITY: For those look-at-me berry lips that will take you from boardroom to bar, simply apply SHISEIDO Rouge Rouge lipstick in Curious Cassis. The creamy, intense formula is vibrant and flattering as well as being really comfortable to wear.

Create those statement brows that work IRL by using SHISEIDO Eyebrow Styling Compact. The choice of shades complements your coloring for a natural finish and the double-sided applicator allows you to draw sharp lines for a bold look or blend shades for a softer finish. For extra definition, or for when you want to achieve an easy, go-to brow look, try the SHISEIDO Natural Eyebrow Pencil. This firm pencil draws in individual brow hairs, while the brush end blends for a natural look that lasts all day.
